"Comedian Venu was assaulted by members of a community, who accused him of offending their community and hurting their sentiments through his acts in a comedy show on a Telugu channel," ACP D Uday Kumar Reddy told PTI.
Police immediately rushed to the spot and rescued Venu by dispersing his attackers, he said, adding the artist later lodged a complaint with Banjara Hills police station.
The ACP said that some members of the community also lodged a complaint against Venu for "offending" their caste, following which a case was registered against him and organisers of the programme (comedy show).
No one was taken into custody so far, he added.
