Tamil Nadu government today announced mini bus services to hilly and remote areas in the state at a cost of Rs 35.20 crore.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced introduction of travel cards in all government buses in the state, wherein a passenger can use his card and the fare for the travel would be deducted from the card.
"In the first phase, this scheme would be introduced in Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation," she said.
The government also increased the number of special buses for children and women plying in Chennai city from 134 to 200.
To encourage passengers reserve their travel in advance, government also announced a 10 per cent discount on passengers who book more than 10 tickets. "However, to avoid this scheme from being misused, this concession will not be provided during Diwali and Pongal (festivals)," she said.
The government would also computerise 42 drivers test areas in the state, wherein the test would be recorded and licence would be given accordingly, she said, adding, Rs 10 crore has been allocated towards this initiative.
The government would also open 25 new government bus depots across the state at a cost of Rs 22.50 crore.
