As the truckers' strike entered the seventh day today, the Tamil Nadu government sought the Centre's intervention, flagging concerns over shortage of essential commodities and increase in their prices if the stir continued.
In a letter to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the strike had led to stagnation of perishables like vegetables, flowers, eggs and poultry from various parts of the state.
Noting that over 4.5 lakh lorries and trucks are registered in the state and more than 10 lakh people were directly and indirectly dependent on the goods transport sector, he said the livelihood of many had been affected by the strike.
"There is a danger of increase in the price of essential commodities and continuance of this strike might result in shortage of essential commodities in the State" he said.
"I, therefore, request your immediate intervention in the issue to resolve the strike and to pave the way for uninterrupted transport of goods," he urged Gadkari
