Expressing shock over Iyer's demise, Rosaiah, in a release, described him as a "great legendary" known for "legal acumen and simplicity".
"The passing away of this great legal luminary has left a void in the judiciary. He had on no occasion hesitated to give a call to uphold the principles of democracy, law and justice," he said.
J Jayalalithaa in her condolence message said passing away of Iyer was a "huge loss" to the nation.
Noting that Iyer's constant activism and commitment to national and social issues would be remembered for ever, she said, "he will remain a beacon light for legal luminaries and his legendary and sterling judgments will guide generations to come".
Condoling Iyer's death, Karunanidhi said his comments against the death sentence would remain forever in Indian judiciary.
Leaders from CPI and CPI(M) also condoled the death of Iyer.
