"Ujjair went missing from his house in Chaman colony around 4.00 PM yesterday. He had gone to play outside along with his elder brother Rihan. However, Ujjair went out of sight of Rihan and fell down in the fast flowing water of the drain," City superintendent of police Salman Taj Patil said.
Unaware about the drowning of his brother, Rihan reached home alone.
Upon information by Ujjair's parents, police reached the spot and viewed footage of CCTV cameras installed in nearby buildings.
A team of national disaster response force (NDRF) was also summoned to look for the toddler, he said.
At around 3.00 am, the team of local diver Ali and NDRF fished out Ujjair's body from the fast flowing drain.
Meanwhile, irate locals lodged a strong protest against the "negligence" of the civic body and demanded that the open drain be covered, the officer added.
