: A proposal to develop a tourism corridor from Shirva to Malpe in Udupi district on a Public Private Participation mode was under the consideration of the state government, state Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake has said.
The project involved widening of the Shirva-Malpe road and shops for selling handicraft by rural artisans would be set up on the corridor to encourage handicraft industries.
An estimated Rs 10 crore would be needed for the project and the funds would be made available under the coastal tourism development project, he said, inaugurating the world tourism day celebrations in the neighbouring district of Udupi yesterday, a release here said.
The project would promote the development of beaches in Udupi district including Kaup, Malpe and Marvanthe, he said.
The reconstruction of roads in the coastal district would ensure better connectivity, enhancing beach tourism and water sports. There was also tremendous scope for pilgrimage tourism in the district, connecting the Sri Krishna temple at Udupi and Sri Mookambika temple at Kollur, he said.
The State government had sent a proposal last year to the Centre seeking relaxation of the Coastal Regulation Zone norms in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to promote tourism, which had been done in Kerala and Goa and was awaiting a response, he said.
