Tremors were felt in Assam, including Guwhati where at least 30 buildings today developed "minor" cracks after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale struck Nepal today.
"We have received reports of around 30 cracks in and around Guwahati after the jolts this afternoon. To verify the claims of the people, we have formed a team under one ADC," Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu told PTI here.
The DC, however, said there has not been any report of casualty or injury from any part of the city.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla to take stock of the situation in the state in the aftermath of the earthquake that shook the neighbouring Nepal and parts of India including the North East.
Gogoi also directed the Chief Secretary to see whether there was any loss of property due to the earthquake in the state, said a government release.
The Chief Secretary has also been asked to alert the Assam State Disaster Management Authority and other departments to face any exigencies arising out of possible earthquake.
The Chief Minister has also asked Khosla to take necessary steps to see if any individual from the state is stranded because of earthquake in Nepal and ensure their safe return, the release added.
Angamuthu also said many persons from Guwahati, which primarily constitutes the Kamrup Metropolitan district, were in Nepal when the massive earthquake struck.
"People are complaining that they are not able to establish any contact with their relatives in Nepal. We have assigned a nodal officer to assist them," he added.
Assam government has started a toll-free numer "1070" for enquiry related to people from the state stuck in the Himalayan nation.
