The TRS, which is ruling Telangana, will raise its proposal to hike reservations to backward sections among Muslims in Parliament and could also approach Supreme Court on the matter, party chief and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said here today.
Speaking on welfare of minorities in the Legislative Assembly, Rao said he has taken up the issue of reservation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi who, he said, responded positively to the request.
As the proposed 12 per cent quota would lead to the reservations exceeding the 50 per cent cap, the way to facilitate reservation is by including it in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution as done in the case of Tamil Nadu, he said.
"If they don't give, we will fight in Parliament or we will go to Supreme Court," he said.
The state legislature had earlier passed a bill increasing quotas for STs and Muslims.
Rao announced several measures for the welfare of minorities, especially for the welfare of Muslim community.
They include setting up skill development centres and women empowerment centres, protection of Waqf lands, recruitment of Urdu teachers and Urdu officers (in CMO, district Collector's offices and others), promotion of Urdu as second official language and construction of a building at Ajmer in Rajasthan.
Responding to a request from MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, he said the state government would make efforts to get the jewellery of Nizam (housed in Delhi) to Hyderabad.
Those who participated in the debate include Leader of Opposition (Congress) K Jana Reddy, his party colleague T Jeevan Reddy and BJP's Ch Ramachandra Reddy.
