Two Meghalaya farmers who were arrested by Assam Police for alleged encroachment in the disputed Langpih area were released on bail after almost a month in jail, officials said today.
Skendro and Kwendro Lyngdoh Mawnai, hailing from West Khasi Hills district, were produced in a Guwahati court, which released them on bail yesterday.
The two were arrested on June 15 after they had gone to plough a field owned by one J L Mawnai at the disputed area. Assam Police alleged the farmers had violated the Assam Forest Act by destroying forest land in the area.
