Keeping in view the widespread devastation in rain-ravaged Uttarakhand, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today reviewed the steps being taken to address health-related issues, including dealing with a possible epidemic, in the state.
Azad spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna and inquired him about the healthcare situation in the disaster-hit state.
He told reporters that he held a meeting with officials of his ministry to discuss the steps to be taken after the flood waters recede in the hill state.
Earlier, addressing a valedictory function of World Blood Donor Week organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, Azad said, "The actual loss of life and property can only be estimated after the evacuation gets over. I only pray to Allah that the damage remains restricted...My ministry is ready to provide all sorts of help required by the state."
Describing it a sad day, Azad raised concerns about the people trapped in the hill state and said he would visit after the evacuation operations are over.
"I don't want to disturb the state government, the paramilitary forces and the Army who are working hard to rescue the trapped people right now. Once they (stranded people) all gather in the camps, we will give the required help and also visit the spot," he said.
Raising the issue of blood donation, Azad, who is also Chairman of IRCS, said there are many people who can donate blood, but the youth are not forthcoming due to lack of awareness and motivation.
"Since blood has no substitute, blood donation is a social responsibility for everyone. Unfortunately, only 10 out of 1,000 persons donate blood in our country as against 34 persons per 1,000 in developed countries annually," he said.
The minister also flagged off three trucks containing tents, stove, family packs and tarpaulin for the flood-hit people.
