UP govt to withdraw SLPs in SC on police recruitment scam

The decision to withdraw the SLPs was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav here.

The previous SP government had appointed 22,716 personnel as constables in civil police and PAC and radio wireless operators through 55 appointment boards in 2005-2006.

After assuming charge, the Mayawati government in 2007 ordered an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the recruitment and set up a committee headed by the then ADG, Shailja Kant Mishra, to probe the issue.

On the committee's recommendations the BSP government cancelled the appointments made by 42 boards.

The decision was later challenged in the High Court, which set aside the Mayawati government's cancellation order. Later, 254 SLPs were filed in the Supreme Court in different cases and the apex court also gave its decision in favour of the recruits in one of the SLPs in 2009.

"The Cabinet has decided to withdraw its SLP and 253 related SLPs in the case as it has no significance now as the recruits are working in the department and they have crossed the upper limit of joining another department. So the decision is justified," a government spokesman said.

The State Government is also likely to withdraw its departmental enquiry against officers in the matter, sources said.
