Jails in Uttar Pradesh are overcrowded and housing inmates way above their capacity, according to government response in the state assembly on Friday.
Replying to a question from BSP member Sukhdev Rajbhar, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the five central jails in the state have 10,735 inmates against their total capacity of 8,049.
He said the 62 district jails can accommodate 50,650 inmates, but they are holding 84,944 prisoners.
The inmates are given facilities as per the jail manual, Adityanath said in a written reply.
According to UP prisons department website, the inmates are entitled to facilities of food, medical assistance, clothes, bed, clean and hygienic environment.
