UP to seek over Rs 300 cr from Centre for police modernisation

Plauged by law and order problem, Uttar Pradesh government will seek Rs 302 crore from the Centre for police modernisation.
UP Chief Secretary Javed Usmani today directed officials to "immediately" send a proposal of Rs 302.30 crore to Centre.
"In view of the shortage of police houses and modern equipments, a provision of Rs 195.63 crore for construction of houses and Rs 106.67 crore for purchase of equipments is to be made," Usmani said.
The Chief Secretary, who chaired a meeting to approve the proposals to be sent to the government of India for police modernisation, said,"Instead of police barracks, quarters of different types should be proposed so that policemen can live with their families at their places of postings."
He said that there is a proposal to purchase 852 light vehicles, including motorcycles, to help in mobility at police stations.
For crowd control, 2,200 non-lethal weapons of various types at a cost of Rs 11 crore and 36,000 chili bombs will also be purchased, Usmani said.
He said for combating cyber crime, a provision for setting up cyber crime labs in nine police training institutes at the cost of Rs 10 crores has also been made.
The chief secretary said that a provision of Rs 10 crore for purchase of necessary equipments to be used in forensic science laboratories to help in scientific investigation; Rs 10 crore for modern communication devices; Rs 8 crores for purchase of modern equipment for Intelligence network; and Rs 30 crore for CCTV system for monitoring and traffic has also been made.
