"The United States strongly condemns the cowardly attack on Afghan forces and civilians in Kabul this morning that killed dozens and wounded hundreds," said Ned Price Spokesman of the National Security Council.
The US reiterated its commitment to support Afghanistan.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and their loved ones. At the outset of this year's fighting season, we remain committed to supporting the Afghan people and their government," he said in a statement.
The US will remain steadfast partners with Afghan security forces as it works to promote peace and stability in the region, and as they counter the threat of terrorism that affects all, Price said.
In a separate statement, the State Department Spokesman John Kirby sent his deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured.
"This incident underscores the harm the Taliban and other violent extremists continue to inflict on the Afghan people. Attacks like these only deepen our support for the people and Government of Afghanistan, and their efforts to bring security and stability to Afghanistan," Kirby said.
