The US is sending a disaster response team to earthquake-hit Nepal and has authorised an initial USD 1 million to address the immediate needs in the country.
The Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal, said the US is working through USAID's Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) to provide assistance to earthquake victims in Nepal.
US OFDA chief Jeremy Konyndyk said USD 1 million has been authorised to address immediate needs.
"USAID, OFDA is launching a DART (disaster assistance response response team) to respond to the Nepal quake and has authorised an initial USD 1m to address immediate needs," he wrote on twitter.
US President Barack Obama was today briefed on the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal, killing nearly 1,500 people and flattening houses and buildings.
"The President has been briefed (on the earthquake)," a White House official told PTI when asked about the earthquake.
The quake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale, which was followed by 16 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater, killed nearly 1,500 people in Nepal and left several thousands injured and hundreds missing across the country.
