Videocon Telecom targets Rs 10,000 crore revenue from new biz by 2020

Mobile operator Videocon Telecom today said it aims to generate a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore by 2020 from its newly carved out vertical of emerging businesses.

The company said it will be making investments in non-spectrum businesses going forward as the life of smaller players like it is very short in the GSM telecom business.

"GSM is a limited game. We will not bid for spectrum in upcoming auction that is absolutely clear," Videocon Telecom Director and CEO Arvind Bali told PTI at the Mobile World Congress here.

Bali added the company will make all its investments into non-spectrum businesses, mostly into enterprise side or new products which are more in sync with other businesses of Videocon Group.

"We have started a new vertical few months back, which is called emerging business. Our objective is to add multiple business lines into that and grow it to achieve a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore by 2020," Bali said.

The company, Bali said, has started tasting success in its small verticals. Soon, it plans to start e-recharge aggregation and e-wallet business under the new vertical.

Bali said the main purpose of the visit to Mobile World Congress was to get maximum tie-ups for emerging business. "We have signed up MoUs for our emerging business here," Bali added.

He further said it has become clear that for a smaller player like it, there is very limited life in GSM and it will be very tough.

"We are going to run our operations in GSM and whatsoever investment has gone by, we will try to monetise that and look for opportunities like spectrum sharing in circles like Haryana with partners," Bali said.

Videocon Telecom has already sold its spectrum in two service areas of Gujarat and UP (West) for Rs 3,310 crore. The company had won spectrum in six circles — UP East, UP West, Bihar, Gujarat, MP and Haryana in the 2012 auctions for Rs 2,221.44 crore.

Also the company is in talks with some operators for spectrum trading in UP (East) and Bihar circles.

Bali said to strengthen its non-spectrum business, it is also looking at acquiring smaller companies in the field of information technology and manufacturing etc.

It will also expand its fibre to home business to states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The company currently has operations in Punjab. It has about 6,000 kilometre of fibre.
