The much-awaited Rs 40-crore solid waste management project (SWMP) in Berhampur town in South Odisha will be implemented soon in public private partnership (PPP) mode.
Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already signed the concession agreement with two Baroda based companies for implementation of the project for next 20 years, official sources said today.
Berhampur Waste Management Company Private Limited - a consortium of ULP Environment and Engineering, Ram Engineering and Construction Company and BMC has been formed for implementation the project.
The project will be an integrated system involving collection, transportation, treatment and disposal with composting technology and closure of site.
Since BMC has no resources to pay the amount for the peoject, we have decided to collect at least Re 1 per household in the town, said BMC commissioner Ajit Mishra.
The town has around 90,000 households. Implementation of the project was delayed due to Phailin which struck Ganjam district in last October.
BMC has asked the implanting agency to start the process of collection of the garbage from August next. "We will set up the plant for processing the solid waste after 15 months of the collection of the waste materials," said KP Maheswari, CEO of UPL Environment and Engineering.
Initially, they planned to process the waste materials for formation of the compost, said another official of the company. When collection of the solid waste would be more, they may plan a power plant. The company has already generated the power from the solid waste in Navi Mumbai.
Presently, around 150 tones of solid wastes are being generated in the town daily. The quantity was likely to be reached around 250 tones in the next 30 years, BMC sources said. Some other adjoining towns like Gopalpur, Chhatrapur, Chikiti, Digapahandi and Hinjilicut would be included in the project in future, where the implanting agency collects the garbage from there.
