Although girl candidates outnumbered boys by 9.18 per cent, yet boys performed better in the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) results declared today.
Around 11.4 lakh students had sat for the class ten exams, known as 'Madhyamik', out of which 54.59 per cent were girls.
But only 79.62 per cent of the total girl students could clear the exams this year compared to 86.34 per cent of boys, WBBSE administrator Dr Kalyanmoy Ganguly said.
Officials are however happy with the significant rise of girl candidates in the state.
"The fact indicates that there is a growing urge not only to send girl children to school among the entire cross section of society but also to continue their study at least upto the secondary level," Ganguly said.
Also, there were a total of 1,67,561 number of Muslim girls who sat for the exam as compared with 1,04,989 boys.
Like previous year's, the pass percentage in East Midnapore district was the highest at 93.1 per cent among all the districts.
The topper was Souvik Barmam of Mathabhanga High School in Cooch Behar who scored 683 marks out of 700.
None of the students were from Kolkata in the top ten list.
From correctional homes there were 30 candidates out of which only one failed the exam.
