The Ministry of Women and Child Development has constituted a committee to finalise modalities for media campaign against indecent portrayal of women in mass media and sensitising people against crimes like female foeticide and dowry.
The committee is headed by Additional Secretary of WCD Ministry, K Ratna Prabha.
In the meeting of the Committee of Secretaries (COS) held on January 23 over the issue of tackling the menace of sexual crimes against women, it was decided that a media drive would be launched to highlight the positive aspects of women empowerment against negative, indecent and stereotyped projection of women in movies, TV shows and advertisements.
The WCD Ministry in collaboration with the the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had decided to form the panel to draw up the modalities of the campaign in the mass media.
The terms of reference of the committee include finalising modalities of the campaign through print and electronic media with an aim to instill a sense of respect for women in all spheres of life.
The terms also include suggesting innovative strategies to project women in a more positive, proactive and empowered manner to create maximum impact on the society and bring about a change in the attitude of people towards women.
Besides, the panel will also sensitise families about girl child by giving instances of women achievers, abhor civil practices like female foeticide, dowry and also identify areas of cooperation between WCD and I&B Ministry on all such issues that demand sustained public interest campaigns in print, electronic and social media.
