A wild elephant attacked and trampled to death an elderly couple in the Boluvapatty forest range area on the city outskirts, police said.
The 70-year-old A Vellingiri and his wife Bhagavathy (58) had gone to collect firewood around 2.30 PM, when the elephant attacked them, they said.
Vellingiri died on the spot, while the tusker chased and gored his wife, injuring her in the thigh.
Hearing her screams, some persons managed to chase the elephant away, rescued and took her to hospital.
However, she succumbed to her injuries later, police said.
