Kumar, who had not been keeping well for sometime, breathed his last at Nagpur's Shivganga Criticare Hospital this morning, sources in the city-based university said.
He was 52 and is survived by mother, wife and two daughters.
A condolence meeting was organised in the city where top officials of YCMOU and its employees paid tributes to Kumar, who took over as Vice Chancellor on March 4, 2010.
Prakash Atkare, Registrar of YCMOU, presided over the condolence meeting.
The noted academician, who had a PhD in physics, had also served as Principal of Nagpur's Dr Ambedkar College and Director of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Vidyapeeth.
During his stint at YCMOU, Kumar started various courses for truck and autorickshaw drivers.
