The Young Mizo Association (YMA) has appealed to Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla to initiate peace talks with the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) to bring long-lasting peace in the north eastern part of the state adjoining Manipur.
A statement by the YMA today said the YMA central committee leaders met Lal Thanhawla yesterday and reiterated their appeal to hold parleys with the HPC(D).
The Hmar outfit operating from Manipur has been demanding a separate autonomous district council in the north eastern part of the state under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and had been indulging in violence since 1997.

The HPC (D) which was dissatisfied with formation of
the SHDC went underground again after the accord and continued to demand a separate autonomous district council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution comprising the same area.
HPC (D) was represented in the August talks by the delegation led by Lalthalien, a church leader and comprising former President of Hmar Inpui (Hmar Supreme House) Dr John Pulamte, President of Hmar Students Association (HSA) Lalthlamuana Hmar, General Secretary of Hmar Inpui Francis Songate, Rohringa and Thanglianchhunga.
The state government delegation led by Additional Secretary for Home Lalbiakzama comprised of Joint Secretary for home Lalhriatpuia, SP, CID (SB) Rodingliana Chawngthu and OSD (Home) David H. Lalthangliana.
Mizoram government and the HPC (D) militants had made several efforts to find amicable solution to the Hmar imbroglio and the last talks held in 2013 fizzled out over the period of extension of the Suspension of Operation (SoO).
Many HPC (D) cadre, including its 'self-styled army chief' Lalropuia Famhoite were in jail awaiting trial while the top leaders including the outfit's Chairman H. Zosangbera was arrested earlier and now absconding after released on bail.
Fresh efforts to bring peace in the north eastern part of the state adjoining Manipur, known as the HPC (D) demand area, began after Young Mizo Association (YMA) leaders sought the help of the powerful central committee of the YMA in Aizawl to urge the state government to initiate talks again with the Hmar militants.
