Youth Congress workers today tried to gherao Punjab Agriculture Minister Tota Singh's house here and demanded his resignation over extensive damage caused to cotton crop by white fly attack.
They accused the state government of purchasing "spurious" pesticides which, they claimed, "failed" to contain the pest.
They also burnt effigy of the Minister.
Indian Youth Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring addressed the gathering seeking a "CBI probe into the purchase of pesticide worth Rs 33 crore."
Police had put up barricade to prevent the workers from moving towards the Minister's house. When they did not stop police used water cannon to disperse them.
They also detained about 200 of the protesters including Warring.
