The 22-year-old musician, who quit the band this March, slammed Tomlinson after he indulged in a war of words with producer Naughty Boy, who is working with Malik on his solo material.
The ugly Twitter spat invited wrath of the fans for Malik. Upset over the criticism, he tweeted, "Don't know why I'm being attacked for defending myself , people got it twisted! I love my fans ?! Every single one of you (sic)."
The producer responded, "@Louis_Tomlinson and some people can't even sing.. But who's complaining when there's auto tune."
Tomlinson, 23, took a dig at Naught Boy, saying, "@NaughtyBoyMusic Jesus forgot you were such an in demand producer... How does it feel to be riding on the back of someone else's career?"
This supposedly angered Malik as he then asked Tomlinson to mind his business, "@Louis_Tomlinson remember when you had a life and stopped making bitchy comments about mine?"
