Steel Authority of India (SAIL) will set up a galvanising plant in Assam at an initial investment of around Rs 50 crore. Union steel and mines minister Birendra Prasad Baishya said the project will be undertaken by the Bokaro Steel Plant and carried out in two phases.

The plant will come up at Dagaon, between Kamalpur and the Rangia railway junction - about 60 km from Guwahati. The entire project is expected to be completed in a period of two to three years. In the first phase, the plant will have the capacity to produce 40,000 tonnes of galvanised and corrugated sheets. The project involves the transportation of rolled sheets from Bokaro to the plant site at Dagaon, where these sheets will be galvanised and corrugated.

Galvanised sheets are extensively utilised in white goods industries, while corrugated sheets are primarily used in the construction and housing sector as roofs. The demand for such items is estimated to grow in the coming months.

SAIL has requested the state government to provide land and other sales tax concessions, and the Assam governments decision is expected to be communicated to the ministry within the next 15 days.

Baishya said Metallurgical Engineers and Consultants (MECON), who had been appointed to make a feasibility study on the proposed project, have submitted their report.
