The two companies are also moving the ministry of chemicals and fertilisers to slap anti-dumping duty by invoking the necessary provisions. IPCA, another bulk producer, is slashing production of anti-malarial drugs by 44 per cent.

According to P C Godha, managing director, IPCA, of the installed capcity of 360 tonnes, we will be utilising only around 200 tonnes this year. Industry sources said the Chinese chloroquine is sub-standard and would not have been cleared by the food and drug authorities in any developed country. China produces 1,000 tonnes of chloroquine but has little domestic consumption. It has therefore decided to enter the 550 tonne Indian market, at an approximate landed price of Rs 1,200 per kilogram.

IPCA as a result does not expect any rise in its domestic bulk drug sales this year though it has registered a 60 per cent rise in exports during the first five months of the current financial year over the corresponding period last year.nclude virtual="/incs/right.asp"-->
