With Diwali not far away, Ajit Chauhan, MD of Krauter Healthcare, believes an iPod still makes a great gift, especially with new models launched so frequently. Chauhan also knows exactly which one gadget all men remember, long after it’s outdated.
Is there a gadget that’s not available in the market but which you’d love to have?
The first paper e-reader — it is flexible and you can turn pages by touching the screen.
What gizmo is with you all the time?
My BlackBerry phone, as it helps me stay connected with work, wherever I may be.
What’s the one gadget you think defines you?
My BlackBerry, as I like to be in control of all that is important for the business. I believe in clearing all my correspondence at the earliest so that down the line things do not get delayed. Competition is quite high in our line of business.
Name a gizmo that you think is highly overrated.
The iPhone, because I think that it’s not for serious business. It is excellent, however, for listening to music, searching the Web and such things. Initially everyone wanted to have one, but now they are realising the limitations of it.
Who is your gizmo guru?
Steve Jobs, for making Apple the centre of innovation. He has brought out products that force the competition to try to follow him.
What’s the one gadget that you love to gift?
An iPod. People across the world love the product, and every few months there is a new model launched with new features.
What is one of the first gadgets you ever bought?
My basic cellphone, a Samsung model. It lasted only six months before I shifted to PDAs.
What gadget was a terrible buy in retrospect?
The O2 PDA phone, as it used to keep hanging all the time. I bought it with a lot of expectations, but the software problems forced me to discard it in three months.
Is there a gizmo you lost and still feel bad about losing?
My first BlackBerry. It had a lot of my contacts and messages. It was quite frustrating to lose it.
What gizmo do you now find embarrassing to own?
The Bluetooth ear phone. It looks as if one is on the sets of Star Wars.
Do you keep any gadgets for their sentimental value, even though they don’t work?
My first electric shaver. I guess the first shave is a memorable day for all men!
