Fast bowler Akash Deep made his India debut as he was given his maiden cap at the start of the fourth Test of the five-match series between India and England at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) Stadium in Ranchi on Friday, February 23. This was the only change in a settled Indian playing 11.

England on the other hand has plenty of problems, the biggest of them all being the form of its prime batters Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. While Root could contribute with the ball, Bairstow has simply not been able to tackle the Indian spinners. However both of them kept their place in the playing 11 released by the team on Thursday, February 22.

India had two options for fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar to replace Bumrah. They could have even pitched four spinners if the Ranchi wicket is spin-friendly and Axar Patel might see himself back in the squad. But given that India already has three quality spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, it was Akash Deep who got a game.

Rajat Patidar managed to keep his place in the playing 11. Devdutt Padikkal was lurking behind to make his India debut as well.
