Polling for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections began on Friday, with students voting for the four central panel posts and college representatives in a closely watched contest involving the ABVP, NSUI and the AISA-SFI alliance. Voting for students attending day classes will continue until 1 pm, while polling in evening colleges will be held from 3 pm to 7:30 pm, officials said. Security arrangements have been stepped up across the Delhi University campus ahead of the student union elections, with more than 2,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces to be deployed during campaigning, polling and counting, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. The final day of campaigning is scheduled for Wednesday, while polling will be held on Friday and the results for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election will be declared on Saturday. The officer said security would be heightened around all colleges and other important locations of the university to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections and maintain law and order. Adequate police personnel will be deployed at strategic locations around the colleges, while foot patrols, motorcycle teams and PCR vans will maintain a visible presence around the campus, the officer said. The results of elections in 52 colleges and departments of the Delhi University were announced on Sunday, with both the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) maintaining their lead. The ABVP achieved a clean sweep in five colleges, while the NSUI captured all positions in two colleges. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the candidates of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) and college elections to clean all campus structures defaced during the polls if they wanted vote count to take place. The high court, which had on September 26 halted the counting of votes and declaration of results of DUSU and college elections, said its purpose was only to send a message that such violations would not be tolerated and not to thwart the election process. Twenty-four candidates are in the fray for the elections. The DUSU elections were last held in 2019. The polls could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 while possible disruptions to the academic calendar prevented their conduct in 2022. Chander Shekhar -- the chief election officer for the polls -- said the university recorded a voter turnout of 42 per cent. Around one lakh students were eligible to vote in the election. While the voting percentage was higher than in 2019 when a turnout of 39.90 per cent was recorded, it failed to surpass the nearly 11-year-high figure of 2018. Polling for the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election will be held on electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the DUSU panel and on paper ballots for the college students' unions, according to a notice issued by the DU's chief election officer on Monday. "This is to inform Principals/Directors/Heads of all colleges/institutes/departments affiliated with DUSU that EVMs would be provided only for DUSU 2023 elections. The college students' election will be held by paper ballots that have to be procured, printed and managed entirely by the college itself," the notice said.
