Investors' funding in the edtech space is driving an unwarranted behaviour which is not good for the industry, Byju's Aakash Education Services Ltd (AESL) Managing Director and CEO Deepak Mehrotra has said. Speaking to PTI, Mehrotra also said that digital alone can't meet aspirations of medical and engineering students looking to get into premium institutions, and it is important to address requirement of new learners. "Investors' funding is very clearly driving behaviours which are not good for anyone, I only hope sanity prevails," said Mehrotra who was appointed AESL's CEO on Monday. He was replying to a query about the need for consolidation in the edtech and test preparatory space where there has been a lot of changes in the business models of several firms. During the edtech's growth stage, several brick-and-mortar test preparatory firms entered the online space, while online education firms added brick-and-mortar centres. Global alternative investment firm Investcorp has led an investment of Rs 340 crore (USD 41 million) in the paper-based packaging solutions provider Canpac Trends, companies said in a joint statement on Friday. The transaction provides a partial exit to JM Financial's second India fund that has been invested in Canpac since 2021. Founded by Nilesh Todi, Ahmedabad-based Canpac makes folding cartons, which have diverse end-use in fashion and retail, food and food services, FMCG, and industrial products. It also makes paper bags, luxury boxes, corrugated cartons and flexible laminate solutions. Canpac has four manufacturing plants in Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, apart from an R&D facility. The investment will help Canpac expand its production footprint to more manufacturing hubs, apart from scaling up sales capabilities, Canpac founder Nilesh Todi said. Markets regulator Sebi has set up a pavillion at the India International Trade Fair here to showcase the well-regulated securities market of the country and to spread the message of financial literacy and investor awareness. During the 14-day event, Sebi, market infrastructure institutions and industry associations will organise activities such as talk shows by market experts, skits, muppet shows and other activities to spread investor education and awareness, the markets regulator said. Sebi, along with exchanges BSE, NSE, MCX, NCDEX, and market intermediaries -- CDSL, NSDL, AMFI, ANMI and CPAI -- set up the pavilion 'Bharat Kaa Share Bazaar' in the 42nd India International Trade Fair, it said in a statement.
