Foreign investors welcome in shooting league, says NRAI president

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) is not averse to foreign entities buying stakes in the franchise-based Shooting League of India, said its president Kalikesh Singh Deo following a meeting of the federation to take key decisions on the event. The inaugural edition of the league is scheduled later this year. The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), the global governing body for the sport, has officially allotted a November-December window for SLI and the event is likely to be organised from November 24 to December 7. A total of 6-8 city-based franchises will own the teams and bid for players via an auction. Each team will consist of 12 athletes (6 men, 6 women), including up to four foreign players (two men, two women). "We have started conversation with (prospective) franchises. But I don't see the reason why a foreign franchise would be interested; that they can't have a stake, given of course subject to any conditions in the law of the land," said Singh De

India's restaurant sector can create 15 million jobs by 2028: NRAI

India's restaurant sector has the potential to provide employment to 1.5 crore people by 2028, from 85 lakh at present, provided it gets the "right impetus" from the government including an 'industry' status and benefit of input tax credit on GST, National Restaurant Association of India's (NRAI) Vice President Zorawar Kalra said on Wednesday. The NRAI claims to represent 5 lakh restaurants across the country. The association has been at loggerheads with food delivery aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato primarily over the aggregators' foray into the quick-commerce space with their own private-label brands, arguing this move undermines fair competition and harms independent restaurants. "We don't have a separate industry status, that would be a big positive move, as it would give us a voice," Kalra told PTI. The NRAI Vice President, who is also the Founder and Managing Director of Massive Restaurants Pvt. Ltd, described the lack of input tax credit on GST as a "major issue" faced by t

Budget 2025: NRAI seeks industry status, subsidies for food services sector

National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) on Wednesday asked the government to grant industry status to the food services sector while seeking an equitable and fair e-commerce policy to provide a level-playing field to protect restaurants, delivery partners and consumers from potentially exploitative practices of platforms. In its pre-Budget recommendations, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) said restaurants should be allowed to operate for longer hours, and also sought targeted subsidy schemes and access to debt financing for SMEs. NRAI said the industry is expected to reach Rs 7,76,511 crore and grow at an 8.1 per cent CAGR by 2028, making it the third-largest food services market globally. "Given the size (and) immense contribution of the food services industry to the country's economy, it should be accorded an industry status," NRAI said in a statement. Industry status helps in getting lower utility tariffs, reduced property taxes, easier access to finance,

National Rifle Association Of India to host ISSF Junior World Cup 2025

India has been awarded the hosting rights for next year's Junior World Cup involving competitions in rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said on Saturday. This will be the country's third top International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) event in recent times after the senior World Cup in Bhopal in 2023 and the season-ending World Cup Final earlier this year, reinforcing India's stature as one of the sport's top destinations in the world. The dates of the tournament though are yet to be finalised. Reacting to the development after the NRAI received the official confirmation from the ISSF, the national federation's president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, said, "We had a fruitful executive committee meeting of the ISSF in Rome last month and all member federations as well as the ISSF president Luciano Rossi was all praise with the way India has been hosting top international shooting competitions and helping to grow the sport ...

NRAI warns restaurants about aggregator payment gateways, deep discounting

The National Restaurant Association of India has issued an advisory cautioning its members over deep discounting and payment gateway tools offered by aggregator platforms for dine-in operations. The advisory comes when food delivery giants including Zomato and Swiggy are aggressively focusing on expanding their dine-in customer base. NRAI urged restaurants to use aggregator payment platforms only if the payment gateway services are unbundled from the other services that it offers; and makes financial sense as a payment gateway independently compared to other payment gateways. In its advisory, NRAI asserted that aggregators use deep discounting as a tool to attract customers, including the restaurant's regular customers, to their platforms. The customers are then incentivised to participate through aggressive cashback and discounts, which eventually move the restaurants' existing customers to their platforms. "We are fine with aggregator platforms charging restaurants a reasonable .

National Rifle Association of India elects Kalikesh Singh as new president

Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo was elected president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) after he beat his rival VK Dhall 36-21 in the polls held at the Constitution Club of India here on Saturday. Kalikesh, a former MP from Odisha, was taking care of the day-to-day functioning of the NRAI after the position fell vacant last year following the resignation of Raninder Singh as per the government's National Sports Code (NSC). Last year, the Sports Ministry had issued a directive that heads of national sports federations (NSFs) cannot hold office for more than 12 years as per the NSC. The ministry had pointed out in March 2023 that Raninder had completed 12 years as president from Dec 29, 2010 to Dec 29, 2022 and as per the code, he cannot continue any further. After Raninder stepped down in April last year, the NRAI has been headed by its senior vice-president Kalikesh. During Kalikesh's tenure as caretaker head of the federation, India won three bronze at the Paris ...

Quota belongs to country, not to athlete: Bindra backs Olympics' selections

Olympics gold winner Abhinav Bindra on Thursday said promising shooter Rudrankksh Patil was unfortunate to miss the flight to Paris Games, but emphasised that the quota belongs to the country and not to one athlete. Patil, who had bagged a 10m air rifle quota for the Paris Olympics, could not find a place in the 15-member Indian squad for the quadrennial extravaganza after finishing behind Sandeep Singh and Arjun Babuta in the selection trials organised by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). As per the Olympic guidelines, a country can only send top two shooters in one event from trials to the Games. See, it's not a call. It's a matter of selection. There's a due process laid out and they followed the process, Bindra told the media here on the sidelines of the IISM Convocation Ceremony 2024. You'll ask the same question in case the process was not followed. But a fair process was put out for everybody, and it was followed, Bindra added. Bindra further explained his ...

More than 700 para shooters caught in crossfire between PCI and NRAI

More than 700 para shooters have been caught in the crossfire between the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), and are unable to decide which tournament to participate in following different sets of competition circular being issued by the respective bodies. PCI secretary general Gursharan Singh issued a warning on Saturday, saying NRAI inviting para shooters in its competitions was an "unauthorised" act. Para shooting in the country is governed by PCI, which in turn is affiliated to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). At the international level, para shooters compete under the aegis of World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS). NRAI, on the other hand, is affiliated to the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), which in turn is governed by International Olympic Committee (IOC). PCI was taken by surprise when the NRAI issued a series of circulars calling on para shooters to participate in the Zonal/GV Mavlankar Championsh

Kalikesh Singh Deo takes charge as National Rifle Association of India prez

Senior vice-president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo on Thursday took charge as National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president after 'incumbent' Raninder Singh went on a "prolonged leave". The Sports Ministry had issued a directive that heads of national sports federations (NSFs) cannot hold office for more than 12 years as per the National Sports Code, following which Raninder, who was re-elected NRAI president in September 2021, went on leave. The ministry had pointed out last month that Raninder had completed 12 years as president -- from December 29, 2010 to Dec 29, 2022 -- and as per the code, he cannot continue as NRAI chief any further. The NRAI said in a release that its Governing Body in an emergent virtual meeting on Thursday "unanimously" approved Singh Deo as its president. "I humbly accept the responsibility bestowed upon me by the Governing Body and the trust shown upon me by the President. Our immediate priorities lie in putting our best foot forward for important
