I am in the market for a sedan, something that is economical. What is your take on the Honda City? Is it a good buy? Shall I go for the VTEC version or the basic model?
Prakash L, via email
Yes, the Honda City is an economical car and we love its refinement. But before you jump the gun, do know that a brand new City is on the cards and you will be better off buying it. And we hear all models of the new City will feature VTEC engines (not a confirmed report, but quite likely). How long will be the wait? Very soon now!
Alternative movement
I plan to purchase a new car and my budget is in the region of Rs 4.5 to 5 lakh. I have been driving a Maruti Zen VX for the last six years and prior to that, a Maruti 800 for nine years. Now I would like to go for any car other than a Maruti Suzuki. Since I normally drive about 15 km a day, I want a petrol car and I will keep it with me for the next five years at least. What do you recommend?
NC Jain, Vadodara
You have plenty of options and we can suggest two for you to shortlist. You can either buy a larger hatchback like the Hyundai Getz Prime or go for an entry-level three-box model like the Hyundai Accent. The Accent gives you a big car feel and is a fine all-rounder of a car – inside city limits as well as on the highway. Both these cars are refined and reliable and can be serviced across the country.
High BeEm
Am I seeing too many BMWs on the road or is it just that I am noticing them now? And I thought this was a Mercedes-Benz market when it comes to premium cars. Why would anyone buy a BMW over a Mercedes?
R Reddy, via email
Good question! It would need a third World War to find an answer. Sure, what you are seeing are really BMWs — as BMW is getting aggressive in selling cars in India. Some of the dealers, especially in the southern states, are doing well to put BMW into the minds of prospective Mercedes-Benz customers. You choose BMW over Mercedes-Benz (when it comes to luxury models) because the former is more sporty and has an overall “younger” image while Mercedes is all about tradition, quality and comfort. Not that Mercs cannot be sporty and BMWs are not classy... but you get the drift.
