Confederation of Indian Industry has called on the state government to develop new manufacturing areas for textiles and garments, especially the Srirangapatnam-Mysore-Nanjangud belt.

In its vision document for textile/garments industries in Karnataka, CII has said that state government can develop a belt for the textile and apparel industry which has river Cauvery as the water source.

With the establishment of good effluent treatment plants and power, this belt could attract industries from neighbouring industrial towns of Tamil Nadu ? such as Tirupur and Coimbatore ? that have acute water shortage.

The vision document, also says that the textile and garments sector is a sunrise industry. With necessary policy initiatives in terms of infrastructure development, tax and labour reforms, Karnataka's textile and garment industry can grow by leaps and bounds to become a reliable and good quality source for the global market within the next three years.

"The textile and garments industry in Karnataka, which presently employs 4 lakh people, is set to increase its employment potential to over 10 lakh by 2010 and the industry has the potential to double the revenue from the present Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore by the same period", the document highlighted.

While the Indian textile and apparel industry continuing to grow with the textile trade growing at 5.8 per cent and apparel trade at 9.6 per cent, Karnataka has shown a steady growth of around 19.6 per cent over the last five years and a remarkable 63 per cent growth in the last year alone.

Considering that the key expectations of foreign buyers include supply chain strength, cost factors and labour policy, the state has to speed up the improvement of infrastructure in the industrial belts, introduce promotional tax policies and introduce reforms in labour laws.

The government should promote and facilitate infrastructure development projects, especially the development of approach roads, in the industrial areas of Yeshwanthpur, Peenya and others where over 50 per cent of the apparel export industry is situated. It should give special attention to improve the availability of power and water.
