Having recorded new highs in annual performance during recently concluded fiscal 2010-11, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP)—the flagship entity of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)—today landed in a big trouble as four members of a family committed suicide citing company’s alleged reluctance to give job on compassionate grounds as reason for taking drastic step.
Sunil, who was desperately waiting to get a job in BSP after his father’s death, is battling for his life in the BSP hospital. The four woman members in the family including Sunil’s mother and three sisters met the tragic end. They were brought dead in the hospital today morning after the entire family reported consumed poison. The incident however brought down the curtain of five-day long drama that started on April 7 when Sunil and his family members locked themselves in the BSP quarter where they were staying for the last 17 years. Sunil’s father M L Sahu, a deputy manager (industrial relations) with BSP, died in 1994 after he committed suicide (according to police investigation record).
