Carrier, the air-conditioning and refrigeration major, projects a four-fold increase in turnover in the mid term from its Indian operations. The $13 billion company targets a turnover of $ 600 million (Rs 2,650 crore) from the country in five years. The company's Indian operations currently contribute close to $130 million (Rs 574 crore).

Towards this, the company plans to make significant investments in manufacturing, engineering and supply chain to cater to the increasing demand for air-conditioning and refrigeration services in the country. Company executives did not disclose the exact amount of investments earmarked for the purpose.

The surge in organised retail, IT and real estate has led to a spurt in demand for commercial air-conditioners and refrigeration equipment in India. Krishnan Sachdev, director- marketing, product management and engineering, said, "India has become the focus market for the company."

The company planned to enhance its research and development capabilities in the country. "India has a lot of engineering talent that can be tapped for product development, Sachdev added.

The proposed engineering centre would develop air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment for Indian as well as global markets," Sachdev said.

Last year, Carrier consolidated its manufacturing by centrally locating its manufacturing in Gurgaon.

The company is also bullish on the entry of new players in the organised retail sector. Sachdev said, "The retail boom is fuelling demand for commercial ariconditioning and refrigeration equipment. We are in talks with all the major players foraying in retail and presently have an order backlog of 20,000 tonne of airconditioning."

While stating that Carrier would be widening the number of retail outlets in the residential airconditioning segment, Sachdev said, "Carrier use to be a dealer company, we are now a retail company. We recognise the need of retail channels and would be expanding the current network of more than 600 outlets by 50 per cent."

It also plans to open about 100 Comfort Shops, the company's exclusive brand shop, as a part of the retail expansion.
