The decade-old Global Hospitals that anchored its roots in Hyderabad before spreading its branches to Bangalore and Chennai, is now looking to spread its branches farther by having presence in Delhi and Kolkata in addition to opening a hospital in Mumbai during January 2012. By opening the 450-bed hospital in Mumbai, Global Hospitals will have a total of 2,150-beds.

According to Dr K Ravindranath, the founder of Global Hospitals, they have spent over Rs 450 crore in equipping the hospital. “We are working towards a presence in Delhi and Kolkata. While Delhi is in the planning stages, we already have got three acres in Kolkata,” he said.

Global Hospitals, as part of its expansion plans, seeks to follow an asset-light model, which is by not owning land and building. It sees this as the possible model in the future as a lot of infrastructure companies seem to be keen on investing in this space in the next 7-10 years. “But, instead of looking for returns in three years, the infrastructure companies must look at a low cost model, and then profit-sharing,” said a healthcare analyst.

On the funding front so far, the chain has seen a capex of Rs 700-800 crore. While Rs 270 crore was raised as debt, the rest of Rs 450-500 crore came from equity and from internal accruals. The group had raised Rs 130 crore from Everstone Capital about four years ago.
