Nasscom, the body of software companies, has called for amendment in the Indian IT Act to prevent cyber crimes in the country.

Kiran Karnik, president of the association, said changes are necessary to ensure data privacy and network security as these are major concerns for the industry.

Nasscom is now working with the Union ministry for information technology to formulate a draft law to plug the possible loopholes in the present enactment. The draft is going to be ready within two months and it would be made into law after parliament approval.

"Even though incidence of cyber crime is low, we have to be prepared for every possibility," he said.

Pointing out that enforcement was still weaker, Karnik mentioned that Mumbai police has operationalised a cyber crime cell with the help of Nasscom. All the major centres of IT such as Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai will also be encouraged to develop similar facilities.
