These designer stainless steel utensils are coming right into our dining table, literally. The National Institute of Design (NID) has developed a range of stainless steel utensils to address Indian cuisine and eating habits.

The utensils have been developed for Bangalore based Salem Steel plant.

The range mainly includes dinner set, rice plates, water jug, glass, dessert bowl, soup bowl, spoons, cutlaries among others.

"We have developed three variations with contemporary feature, style and aesthetics which jells with today's lifestyle. These utensils have been designed to cater to Indian cuisine," said Pradyumna Vyas, a faculty at NID who designed the utensils.

The designs have already been submitted to the company, he said.

The utensils would mainly target urban and semi urban market, he added.

It took about 3-4 months to design these utensils.

However, this is not the first time that Salem has got their utensils designed at NID.

Earlier, the institute had designed their utensils about 20 years ago.

On the concept of designing utensils, Vyas said the utensils will cater to the design conscious market.

"Looking at the current scenario where designing utensils has become an in-thing in urban and semi urban market, people are willing to spend extra money for a good design," said Vyas.

These utensils will enter in the market in the premium segment.

A dinner set is priced at around Rs 2000, he added. Steel utensils are usually sold in weights but with design intervention and value addition, your dining table may add a silver feather to your design statement.

Sources at Salem steel confirmed the developments by saying, "We have received the designs from NID and will figure out how it will be received in the market."

We may also look for necessary modifications and improvisations. These designs will be trendy and interesting and are likely to hit the market in next couple of months. sources added.
