Against the backdrop of a corruption ridden national scenario, where even reports of alleged involvement of corporate sector in scams too have surfaced in recent days, Assam based Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), on MOnday set an example for others as it voluntarily entered into an agreement with Transparency International India (TII) to implement ‘Integrity Pact’ with its business partners.

"When everyone is talking corruption, we decided to voluntrily enter into this agreement for upholding integrity in our practices. We want to be trend setters for others, as we have been in many other aspects," said a senior company official.

The official added that the agreement was a step towards further strengthening and formalising the existing practices of fair and transparent dealings between the company and the suppliers, contractors and customers.

The agreement was formally signed by Dipak Chakravarty, managing director of NRL, and PS Bawa, Chairman of TII at the company’s corporate office in Guwahati.

“As part of its business cycle, NRL does business with a number of domestic and international bidders, contractors and suppliers of goods and services.

While doing so, NRL is committed to fostering the most ethical and corruption free business environment in all its dealings,” stated a company statement.

A two member panel of independent external monitors will oversee and monitor the implementation of the integrity pact and its effectiveness.

Transparency International India (TII) is the accredited India chapter of Transparency International, an international civil society organisation based at Berlin that has turned the fight against corruption into a worldwide movement.
