Stem cell R&D firm sets up collection centre

LifeCell, the pioneer in stem cell banking and research in India, announced the launch of its 17th marketing and collection centre in Pune, for umbilical cord blood stem cell banking, and announced its plans to expand to 31 cities by March 2007.
 
Cord blood, which is discarded after child birth, is a rich source of stem cells, which can be harvested and cryo-preserved. These stem cells have the potential to cure more than 75 serious ailments.
 
"We have invested Rs 14 crore in this facility and expect the enrolments to shoot up to 15,000 by the end of next year," said Abhaya Kumar, vice-chairman, LifeCell.
 
Currently, the company has 4,000 enrolments and 3,800 samples processed and stored at the banking facility.
 
LifeCell's 21,000 square feet state-of-the-art Stem Cell Processing and Banking facility conforms to the standards of American Association of Blood Banks and USFDA.
 
The facility has a capacity to store over one lakh samples and the technical team has been trained by CRYO-CELL International. It offers its services for a fixed and transparent price. The cost includes enrolment fee of Rs 5000, processing fee of Rs 27,000 and annual storage fee of Rs. 3,500 for 21 years.
 
With marketing and collection centers in Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Surat, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Noida, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Kochi, Trivandrum and Pune, LifeCell has also been awarded the rights to offer this concept in the Asian region by CCI and the company plans to launch its operations in SAARC countries and Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai and Sri Lanka.
