Hansen Transmissions, the fully-owned subsidiary of wind power major Suzlon Energy Ltd, is setting up a gearbox manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Coimbatore at an investment of 170 million euros (Rs 940 crore).

The plant will supply gearboxes to wind turbine manufacturers in the Indian and international markets, including Suzlon.

Over half of the investment will be spent on setting up the required machinery over an area of 65,000 square metres.

The fully-integrated plant will produce gearboxes for wind turbines in the range of 2 Mw and above, Ivan Brems, chief executive officer of Hansen Transmissions, told the media.

While the construction of the facility will start in the summer of 2007, the first production output is expected by the end of 2008. The factory would become fully operational by early 2010 and would have over 600 people on its rolls, Brems said.

"The plant will be an end-to-end facility, engaging in activities ranging from sourcing raw materials to assembling the gearbox units. We will have a product range of up to 3 Mw output. We will apply the same quality standards here which we follow at our gearbox facilities in Belgium," said Brems.

"India has a strong and stable market for wind energy products. We are working with our existing local suppliers and will also encourage our European vendors to consider making investments in India," he added.

With revenues of 285 million euros in 2006, and a market share of 30 per cent for wind turbine gearboxes, Hansen currently has over 15,000 gearboxes in operation worldwide, at least one-third of which are in India. About 79 per cent of Hansen's sales comprise gearboxes for the 2 Mw and higher ranges.

Higher energy consumption, increasing ecological awareness, carbon dioxide exhaust restrictions in emerging economies and decreasing production costs continue to be strong drivers for the wind power industry.

Danish consulting firm BTM Consult expects the annual power generation utilising wind energy equipment to touch 25,000 Mw by 2010 and 35,000 Mw by 2015.
