Software major Wipro, which recently crossed the $1 billion turnover, has acquired 50 acres worth Rs 11 crore from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjawadi to build a campus as an expansion to its existing facility.

Tamal Dasgupta, CIO, Wipro, said the company has taken possession of the land.

Wipro plans to build a sophisticated campus which will fit into its overall plans to be a global player in IT Consulting Services and Business Process Outsourcing market.

Wipro already has a 25 acres campus in the first phase of the Hinjawadi IT Park developed by the MIDC. The new campus in the second phase of the Park, will enable Wipro to expand their operations in Pune, making the city a crucial location for Wipro.

MIDC Dy, CEO Shyam Wardhane, said that out of around 400 acres of land earmarked for IT-BT sector under the II Phase of expansion programme, 111 acres was purchased by Infosys and, with acquisition of 50 acres by Wipro, the allotment of land under the II phase programme for the IT sector has been completed.

He said that MIDC has already started the process of acquiring land under the IIIrd phase of the expansion program, which will be more than that acquired under the II phase, and "we expect the entire process to be completed within the next six months," he stated.

Coming on the heels of major expansion plans and property acquisition in Pune, announced in the past year by companies like Infosys, IBM, Amdocs, Persistent Systems and others.
