The number of students who cleared the Class XII board examination was marginally less this year as compared to the previous one, said the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

It said 82.02 per cent students passed in 2017, against 83.05 per cent in 2016. Girls outperformed this year as well. 87.50 per cent girls passed the exams, compared to 78 per cent of the boys.

Raksha Gopal of Amity International School in Noida scored the highest (99.6 per cent), Bhoomi Sawant of DAV, Chandigarh, the second highest (99.4 per cent). Aditya Jain of Bhawan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, secured third rank with (99.2 per cent).

The students who scored marks in the range of 95 per cent and 100 per cent, increased to 10,091 this year, as compared to 9,351 students last year. However, the pass percentage of both boys and girls has declined this year.

A total of 1.2 million students appeared in the Class XII exams as compared to 0.9 million last year. There are over 18,000 CBSE-affiliated schools, of which 10,673 participated in the exams.

Among the institutes, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Kendriya Vidyalaya performed the best, with 95.73 per cent and 94.60 per cent of their respective students clearing the exams.

The CBSE said among the 10 regions, Thiruvananthapuram had continued to feature the maximum pass percentage (95.63 per cent). Followed by Chennai (92.6 per cent) and Delhi (88.37 per cent).

This year, the CBSE marks are based on its moderation mark policy, where students are given extra marks for difficult questions. The CBSE wanted to scrap the policy this year, but had to drop the idea, following a Delhi High Court decision. The CBSE has not said if it would scrap this policy from this academic year.
