Coast Guard acquires new vessel at New Mangalore Port

The Coast Guard has added a new vessel to its existing fleet of three vessels at the New Mangalore Port, giving a boost to coastal surveillance and security in the region.

'Amartya' -- the vessel built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, arrived at the New Mangalore port on Sunday, Port Trust said in a release here. Indian Coast Guard Commander in Karnataka Rajmani Sharma, who received the vessel, said 'Amartya', the fourth vessel to be based at Mangalore, was equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment.

It could undertake close-coast missions like surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation. The expansion of the fleet in the region was important as the coast here had 18 vital installations from Karwar to Mangalore, including the Konkan railway line, he said.

The ship had an integrated bridge management system, machinery control system, gun mount with automated control system, two radars and closed circuit cameras to watch sailing ships, boats and activities on the shore, he added.
