Curfew-like restrictions continue in parts of Srinagar

Curfew-like restrictions continued in parts of Srinagar city for the third consecutive day today as a preventive measure to maintain law and order.

Restrictions have been imposed on the movement of people in six police station areas - Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, Maharaj Gunj and Maisuma - of the city, police said.

The officials said the decision to continue restrictions in some parts of the city was taken in view of the apprehensions of law and order problems.

Police and paramilitary CRPF forces have been deployed in strength in sensitive areas while concertina wires have been laid at many places in affected areas to prevent people from coming out on main roads, they said.

Police has put all separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest while JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik has been lodged at Police station Kothibagh since wednesday.

The restrictions have been placed in the city as authorities apprehended that separatists might try to use the Muharram procession for getting political mileage.

Meanwhile, restrictions have been lifted from south Kashmir's Anantnag town after five days but police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength to deal with any law and order problems.

Restrictions were imposed in Anantnag town on October 19 following death of Zahid Bhat, who succumbed to injuries at a Delhi hospital on October 18.

Bhat had sustained severe burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack on a trcuk at Udhampur on October 9.
