Delhi's monthly urban per capita spending highest in country

The monthly per capita expenditure in urban areas of Delhi is the highest among all the states, according to Delhi government's report on household consumer expenditure. The average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) in Delhi (urban) has increased from Rs 2,905 in 2010 to Rs 3,842 in 2012. The urban MPCEs of some other states is as follows: Haryana, Rs 3,817; Kerala, Rs 3,408; Punjab, Rs 2,794; Tamil Nadu, Rs 2,622; Andhra Pradesh, Rs 2,685; Gujarat, Rs 2,581; Madhya Pradesh, Rs 2,058; Uttar Pradesh, Rs 2,051; Bihar, Rs 1,507, states the report of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics for the period July 2011-June 2012.

The report states that in the urban areas of Delhi, about 39 per cent of the MPCE was on food items.

The break-up for the spending under food items reveals that 11 per cent was spent on milk and milk products, six per cent on cereals and pulses, two per cent on edible oils, five per cent on vegetables, three per cent on fresh and dry fruits, etc. In the non-food items category, accounting for 61 per cent of MPCE, about six per cent was on fuel and light, 6 per cent on clothing and bedding, eight per cent on education, three per cent on medical, six per cent on rent and one per cent on pan, tobacco and intoxicants.
