After a private chopper crash on Friday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) MI-17 V5 helicopter on Tuesday fell at Uttarakhand’s Gaurikund area. While the bodies of eight, including five IAF officials, had been recovered, 19 were feared killed.

“The bodies of eight people were recovered today. There were 19 on board. The chances of survival in the crash are remote,” said a top police official. The chopper was coming from the Kedarnath shrine area after dropping materials for cremating bodies there.

A court of enquiry has been ordered to investigate the crash. IAF had started inducting Mi-17 V5 choppers only last year after 80 of those were ordered from Russia.

While the incident is said to have taken place due to bad weather, the reason for the crash has yet to be ascertained.

A senior IAF officer in Gauchar said the Mi-17 chopper had made two sorties to the Kedarnath area since morning and was on its third when it crashed.

A private helicopter carrying relief materials for the rain-affected people in Rudraprayag district had crashed on Sunday near Gaurikund leaving the pilot injured.
