Joining its older peers, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has seen a 72 per cent surge in international offers in the first phase of the final placement process for 2019-20 academic year. At IIT Kharagpur, meanwhile, an estimated 1,310 students received job offers during the first phase of placement, an official said.

Students at IIT-H bagged 38 international offers from 18 companies from the US, Japan, and Taiwan so far this year, as against 22 from eight companies from two countries last year, said Pradeep Yemula, faculty in-charge of placements.

At the end of the first phase of final placement process, IIT-H saw 271 offers being extended from 96 companies, including 37 pre-placement offers (PPOs). In all, 483 students registered for placements across departments for placements this year. According to IIT-H, most of the job offers were from IT and ITeS sectors, with its circuit branches crossing more than 80 per cent of placement during first phase.

Top recruiters in phase one included companies such as Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Jaguar Land Rover, Eaton, BNY Mellon, Bajaj Auto & TSMC. Including the accepted PPOs, 251 (single offers) students have already been placed at the end of phase I placements for 2019-20, as compared to 239 (single offers) students, including 19 PPOs, last year.

"This year in phase one itself we surpassed our past year record of phases one and two. We also had a surge in international offers, with 15 per cent of placed students securing offers abroad. Previous year nine per cent of offers were international. The international research and academic collaborations of IIT-H are creating new opportunities for our students," Yemula said.

At IIT Kharagpur, the first phase of placement started on December 1 and ended on December 11. An IIT Kharagpur statement said that while 1,000 students got offers in just five days, the overall figure of 1,310 at the end of first phase placement "comfortably passed all the previous years record." The participation of more than 215 companies during this period has contributed to this achievement. This year students have been able to bag 51 overseas placements, the IIT Kharagpur statement said.
