Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced a solatium of Rs 1 crore to the family of a policeman who lost his life while nabbing chain snatchers.

Jayalalithaa said a police team comprising a Sub-Inspector and Head Constables Munusamy and Dhanapal tried to nab suspected members of a chain snatching gang in Krishnagiri district on June 15.

But the suspects stabbed Munusamy who died in a hospital, she told the state assembly.

She said though a solatium of Rs 500,000 was ordered to be paid to Munusamy's family under the existing rules, it was felt that the amount was not sufficient.

Jayalalithaa said she has ordered a sum of Rs 1 crore to be paid to the family of Munusamy.

She said the state government will take care of the educational expenses of Munusamy's daughter Rakshna.

Jayalalithaa said a new government order will be issued increasing the compensation to be paid to police personnel who die or get injured on duty.
