Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said swift and transparent decision-making and availability of optimal resources were needed for a country's combat readiness.
In his address at the Controllers' Conference 2022 organised by the Defence Accounts Department (DAD), Singh further said that a delay in making a decision leads to loss of both time and money, and affects combat readiness.
Resources around the world are limited, the defence minister said, and emphasised on exercising "financial prudence" in using them.

The Supreme Court on Monday granted time till December 12 to the Centre to file a comprehensive affidavit to petitions challenging the validity of certain provisions of a 1991 law, which prohibit filing of a lawsuit to reclaim a place of worship or seek a change in its character from what prevailed on August 15, 1947, the Press Trust of India reported.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that the reply could not be filed and the matter can be taken up later.
I need to consult with the Government for filing a detailed counter. If some time can be given, the law officer said.

Twitter spends $13 million yearly on food service at its San Francisco headquarters, Elon Musk tweeted on Monday. Replying to former vice president of Work Transformation Tracy Hawkins' claim that the company earlier spent $20-25 per day per person and the attendance was between 20-50 per cent, Musk said that the average occupancy was below 10 per cent. The peak occupancy at the San Francisco headquarters was 25 per cent.
The issue came forth after a report by New York Times (NYT) said that Musk was planning to remove free meals on Twitter. Citing the report, a person wrote on Twitter, "He's failure incarnate", to which another user said that maybe employees "should learn to cook".

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said a conspiracy is being hatched against the state, and the ruling TMC is being defamed as a part of the exercise, the Press Trust of India reported.
Amid the arrests of senior party leaders in graft cases, the TMC supremo said those who have committed mistakes should be given a chance to rectify these.
"A conspiracy is being hatched against the state. A malicious campaign has been unleashed against the government and the TMC as a part of it," she said at a programme here.

Ahead of filing papers for contesting the Mainpuri Lok Sabha bypoll, Samajwadi Party candidate Dimple Yadav on Monday said she dedicates the nomination to principles and values of party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Press Trust of India reported.
The 44-year-old wife of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav will file her nomination later in the day.
In a tweet in Hindi, she said, "With salutation ('naman') to 'netaji' (Mulayam Singh Yadav), we dedicate today's nomination to his principles and values. Netaji's blessings have always been with us, and it will always remain."

Over 1.5 million people in 45 high-burden countries, including India, are estimated to have had a missed or delayed tuberculosis diagnosis in 2020 due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study, the PTI reported.
The research, published in the journal BMC Medicine, shows that children may be disproportionately affected in over half of countries analysed, those aged 65 or over in more than two thirds of countries, with sex being a risk factor in almost half of countries.
The team, including researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK, noted that vulnerable populations in high-burden countries worldwide must be prioritised in efforts to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis (TB) care.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will arrive in Lucknow on Monday evening on a three-day visit, the IANS reported.
Rajnath Singh, who is an MP from Lucknow, has a packed schedule lined up with several events during his trip.
According to the BJP's Lucknow media-in-charge Praveen Garg, the Union Minister is scheduled to meet members of 'Mahanagar Awasiya Kalyan Samiti', the local residential committee, soon after landing on Monday evening.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that investigators have found evidence of 400 war crimes committed by Russian forces in areas of Kherson abandoned by Moscow's forces as they retreated from the strategic southern region, the IANS reported.
In his nightly video address on Sunday, the President said: "Investigators have recorded more than 400 Russian war crimes; bodies of civilians and military personnel who had been killed are being found.
"The atrocities the Russian army has left behind in Kherson Oblast (region) are the same as (atrocities committed) in other parts of our country that it was able to occupy."

The Portugal international and Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has hit out at his team and manager Erik ten Hag, saying he has no respect for the manager.

The Delhi BJP on Monday said an FIR should be registered against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged Rs 20 crore scam in the Delhi Jal Board, the Press Trust of India reported.
Addressing a press conference here, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said the alleged scam was exposed in 2018 when Kejriwal was the chairman of the DJB.
"I believe this is a much bigger scam of Rs 200 crore. Even after it was exposed in 2018, when Kejriwal was the DJB chairman, instead of taking any action, the commission of the accused was raised," the BJP leader said.

The Congress is set to launch a state-wide padayatra in Bihar from December 28 on the lines of 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said here.
He said the 1,200-km-long march against the "communal agenda of the BJP" will start from Banka district and conclude in Bodh Gaya. It will cover 17 districts of the state.
Rahul Gandhi, however, is unlikely to take part in the state-wide padayatra in Bihar.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that India believed in peace, but if provoked, then the country could give a befitting reply, the ANI reported.
The Defence Minister was addressing an event in Jhajjar, Haryana on Sunday, said a press release by the Ministry of Defence.
"India is no longer weak. We believe in peace, but if anyone tries to harm us, we will give a befitting reply. Our soldiers have proved this time and again. 2016 surgical strikes, 2019 Balakot airstrikes and the bravery shown by our soldiers during the Galwan Valley incident are proof of our prowess & preparedness," said Singh.

With the slight improvement in pollution level, the air quality in the national capital was recorded in the 'very poor' category on Monday morning with an AQI of 309, as per System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research SAFAR, the ANI reported.
However, the National Capital Region (NCR) continued to witness bad air as Noida, which is part of the national capital region, recorded an AQI of 344 in the 'very poor' category. Gurugram's AQI stood at 290 in the 'poor category' at 8 am in this morning.
Speaking of other places, Dhirpur recorded an AQI of 375, Lodhi Road recorded 256, Delhi Airport (T3) recorded an AQI of 306 while Mathura road recorded an AQI of 316, Pusa recorded an AQI of 293.

Earlier on Saturday, the party withheld names on 18 seats, while it released the first list of candidates on 232 seats.

Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh has reported a rise in dengue cases with six adults and seven children admitted to dengue wards in a government hospital on Sunday.
"A total of 60-70 cases of fever are reported daily. Those found Dengue positive are kept in the Dengue ward. At present, there're six adults and seven children in Dengue wards," Dr. Shailesh Kumar Singh of Ursula government hospital told ANI.
Earlier on Sunday, several parts of Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district reported an increase in dengue cases with 9 patients currently admitted to the dengue ward in the district hospital.
